Arturo Baroncelli Elected As New IFR President

Joe Gemma the new Vice President

The IFR Executive Board elected Arturo Baroncelli, Comau Robotics, Italy, as the new IFR President last week in Seoul. At the General Assembly meeting Baroncelli thanked the former President, Dr. Shinsuke Sakakibara, Fanuc, for his dedicated work for the International Federation of Robotics during his two-year term of office.

Björn Weichbrodt passed away

The robotics community lost a pioneer

The IFR community is very sad about Björn Weichbrodt's passing away on 12 October in Stockholm. Björn was General Secretary of the IFR from 1994 to 2002. Since 2003 he has been delegate of the Swedish Robot Association SWIRA in the IFR General Assembly. Björn Weichbrodt was a pioneer of the robotics technology.

What are the Challenges for IFR in the future?

The annual study World Robotics has just been published and forecasts are promising. The Robotics industry is looking into a bright future. Challenges facing our industry are not easy but they are feasible. One of the most important challenges I think is the human robot cooperation, i.e. robot assistant.  The implementation of this technique including advanced safety measures, easier, flexible and even more interactive programming and integration will open up plenty of new application fields.

2013-2016: High demand for industrial robots is continuing

"The robotics industry is looking into a bright future!" stated Dr. Shinsuke Sakakibara, IFR President, on the occasion of the publication of the study "World Robotics 2013 - Industrial Robots", on Wednesday. "In 2013, global robot sales will increase by about 2% to 162,000 units. The IFR Statistical Department expects that between 2014 and 2016 worldwide robot sales will increase by about 6% on average per year. In 2016, the annual supply of industrial robots will reach more than 190,000 units."

Considerable increase of medical robots and logistic systems

Strong demand for domestic and entertainment robots

About 16,100 service robots for professional use were sold in 2012, 2% more than in 2011, reports the IFR Statistical Department in the new study "World Robotics 2013 - Service Robots", which was published on Wednesday in Frankfurt. The sales value slightly decreased to US$ 3.4 billion.
