2008 World Robot Market - Already affected by the economic downturn

Slump in 2009 - recovery between 2010 and 2012

In 2008, the worldwide sales of industrial robots stagnated at the second highest level ever recorded. More than 113,000 units were supplied worldwide. More than one million industrial robots were operating in the factories worldwide at the end of 2008, reports the IFR Statistical Department in the new study "World Robotics 2009 - Industrial Robots" which was published on Wednesday in Frankfurt.

Professional service robots are establishing themselves

Worldwide supply of industrial robots stagnated in 2008!

According to the final results of the world statistics on industrial robots, the total worldwide supplies stagnated in 2008 compared to 2007. The financial and economical crisis affected the robot business in many countries already in the last quarter of 2008. In North America, where the crisis started, the robot supplies were down by almost 13% compared to 2007. Also Japan saw a decrease of 8%.

5th IEEE-IFR Invention & Entrepreneurship Award in Robotics & Automation presented

As in previous years the judging panel had a difficult choice to make. The unanimous selection for the 2009 IERA Award winner was Cyberdyne Inc. for its Robot Suit HAL, an innovative human assistance system using an exoskeleton.

IFR Robotics and Economical Worldwide Downturn

The economical worldwide downturn is still going on, with no real signs of light at the end of the tunnel. The announcement that General Motor's CEO was asked to step down, sent another shockwave through Wall Street. The financial crisis has affected the global economy to a greater extend than expected. A recovery depends on a large extent of the banks and their willingness and ability to provide financing, which requires substantial government loans and support. This can still take a long time.
