I am recently back from Tokyo and digesting the impressions from IREX. More than 100,000 visitors came to the IREX 2009 at the end of November in Tokyo. That shows the keen interest in robotics despite the still weak economic situation. Signs of a slight recovery are becoming apparent.

News from the IFR Statistical Department

The results of the IFR Quarterly Statistics on robot shipments for the third quarter 2009 indicate that the decrease of robot shipments has bottomed out worldwide. The shipments of all types slumped by 52% worldwide.

The IFR Secretariat and the IFR Statistical Department hosted a booth at the International Robot Exhibition 2009 (IREX) in Tokyo. This show with the theme "Challenge for the next" which took place on 25-28 November 2009 attracted the attention of more than 100,000.

2008 World Robot Market - Already affected by the economic downturn

Slump in 2009 - recovery between 2010 and 2012

In 2008, the worldwide sales of industrial robots stagnated at the second highest level ever recorded. More than 113,000 units were supplied worldwide. More than one million industrial robots were operating in the factories worldwide at the end of 2008, reports the IFR Statistical Department in the new study "World Robotics 2009 - Industrial Robots" which was published on Wednesday in Frankfurt.

Professional service robots are establishing themselves

By the end of 2008, about 63,000 service robots for professional use were sold. These high-tech and highly valuable robots are increasingly entering factories, hospitals, public buildings, dangerous and hazardous environments, oceans, the space, cow barns, fields,etc., reports the IFR Statistical Department in the new study "World Robotics 2009 - Service Robots", which was published on Wednesday in Frankfurt.

IFR Statistical Department

Worldwide supply of industrial robots stagnated in 2008!

According to the final results of the world statistics on industrial robots, the total worldwide supplies stagnated in 2008 compared to 2007. The financial and economical crisis affected the robot business in many countries already in the last quarter of 2008. In North America, where the crisis started, the robot supplies were down by almost 13% compared to 2007. Also Japan saw a decrease of 8%.
